A Blessing in Disguise

Being diagnosed with Diabetes is not something that anyone ever wants to have happen to them.  For some, the diagnosis is seen as the worst thing in the world, as something that should be hated no matter what.  For others, the diagnosis is seen as a chance at a new beginning, an opportunity to make positive changes in the way life is lived. For me, Diabetes has been a real lifesaver.

Yes, diabetes does complicate my life; the Blood Glucose (BG) testing, the dieting, medications, etc… are all a pain.  Despite that, I can’t overlook the fact that if it weren’t for the symptoms of Diabetes appearing, and ultimately leading to that initial doctor’s visit, the Congestive Heart Failure that I’m also battling would not have been found before it was too late to do anything about it.   If it weren’t for Diabetes, I might not have been alive much longer.

So while I don’t like it, I’ve come to embrace the diagnosis as a blessing in disguise.   I have been given a second chance at life; a chance to live a life that is healthy, active, and fulfilling.   That is  something to embrace, and something for which I am definitely grateful.

It all boils down to attitude, and when faced with any problem, a positive attitude can make a world of difference.

Welcome to My Diabetic Heart

Welcome to My Diabetic Heart.  This is a new blog/info site about living with Diabetes and Congestive Heart Failure.  The site is very much a work in progress, as I have alot things I want to add later.   In the mean time, as you look around the site, you will find:

  • Blog posts from the first 5 months of my fight with Diabetes and CHF,
  • My diagnosis story, and
  • Resources that I’ve found helpful since diagnosis.

I’m very excited to be getting this project off the ground, and hope that it will be an inspiration for everyone who visits.    Thanks for visiting My Diabetic Heart.  Come back soon!

Done with the follow-ups

Had the last two follow up appointments this week, and I’m happy to say that both went pretty well. I saw the GI specialist on Tuesday morning at 8:30am, which was really rough after working until 3am, and having to be back at work at 3pm that afternoon. Dr. Hauck was pleased that the medications I’m taking appear to be working, and that I’m starting to feel better. He’s going to keep me on the Protonix for at least a few more months, and see how I’m doing after that. We definitely want to keep fighting the GI problems as aggressively as we can, and he feels this course of treatment is sufficient. I mentioned to him that I was sick over the weekend, after eating some Italian foods on Friday night, and he said it was more than likely the tomato sauce. So, I’ve got to take it easy on that kind of stuff for a while. And I only have to see him on an as needed basis now, so that’s cool.

I saw my cardiologist this morning at 10:45am, and he is also happy with the way things are going. My blood pressure was good, as was the EKG they did in the office. He’s cut my Aspirin back to the 81mg a day that I was taking prior to the hospital visit, rather than the 325mg that I’ve been taking since then. That will help give my stomach a break, too, as the Aspirin I’ve been taking has contributed to the GI problems that I have now.

I also talked with Dr. Apuri about the amount of exercise/physical activity I should be doing at this point, and he has said he wants me to be as active as my body will allow. Basically, do what I can, and if my chest starts hurting or I get short of breathe, stop. He said he would clear me to join a gym or ymca if I wanted to do so. I thought it might be better to get into something that was medically supervised, so I asked him about getting into a Cardic Rehab program through the hospital instead, and he thought that was a great idea. His office is going to get those appointments set up for me, and let me know when to go.

So yeah, that about wraps it up for now. I definitely have a long road ahead of me, but things are looking up.

Keep Fighting It, and Rock On!
Mike.

One follow-up down, two to go

Had the first of 3 follow up appointments this morning. This one was with my primary doctor, and thankfully, it went rather well. My blood pressure was good (100/77), and Dr. Cabe was pleased that the meds for my GI problems appear to be working. She was a little concerned that my BG levels have been a little high, especially at night, and has increased my evening dose of Metformin to see if that will help. I personally attribute the higher BG numbers to the stress of everything that’s happened this last month, and think the numbers will start to drop now that things are settling down a bit. Time will tell. Dr. Cabe also had me go do a blood draw for some tests to check my potassium levels and kidney function now that I’m on two different water pills. I should have those results soon.

I’ve got a follow-up with the GI specialist on Tuesday, and then another with cardiologist on Thursday. Hopefully they will go as well as today’s appointment did. I’ll be sure to update after each.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Rock on!
Mike

Hospital visit recap

I went to the hospital Monday night for severe chest pain and shortness of breath. My blood pressure was dangerously high, and remained so throughout the first night. I was given a regimen of aspirin, blood thinners, and nitro paste to lower my blood pressure and prevent me from actually having a heart attack. Given my existing congestive heart failure, that’s exactly what I thought was happening. Thankfully, tests later confirmed it wasn’t that at all. Still, very scary stuff my friends.

My cardiologist came into the ER before I was admitted, was thinking he should go ahead and perform a heart catheterization, and was going to do that on Wednesday. I told the doctor that I wanted them to exhaust every other possible scenario before they did a heart cath. There was no way they were cutting on me unless it was absolutely necessary. So he agreed, and said we would see how tests went on Tuesday, and make a decision on how to proceed Tuesday night. So I went ahead and had my mother drive up to Fort Wayne from Louisville, so she would be here no matter what they decided. The rest of Monday night was spent having chest x-rays and CT scans done, as well as a ton of blood drawn for various tests. I may have gotten 2 hours of sleep that night.

Breakfast was cut short Tuesday morning as they wanted to do an Echocardiogram. Let me tell you, they hurt me badly with that. If you want to know what it’s like to be stabbed in the chest, without actually breaking the skin, this procedure is about as close to that experience as it gets. Five days later, my chest still hurts from that damn thing.

So, the cardiologist comes in Tuesday night, to discuss the results from the days tests, and tells me that the x-rays and CT scans indicated that I have a hiatal hernia. News to me; had no clue that was there or what it was even. So, the cardiologist decides to call in a GI specialist to check me out, and see if there’s anything else going on in my stomach, etc… If the results from that round of testing turned up something, then we wouldn’t do the heart cath. If the tests were negative, well, you know… a discovery channel special titled “Journey to the Center of Mike’s Heart”. I know that sounds fascinating to some, but the thought of not making it through that scared the hell out of me. I’m happy to say good sense prevailed and that special was canceled. But, they came up with another one, “A look inside Mike’s Stomach”.

Wednesday afternoon, the GI doctor decided to do an Endoscopy on me. Now for those of you who don’t know what that is, that’s where they stick a thin tube with a camera on the end down your throat and into your stomach. They put you to sleep for it, and you really don’t feel a thing. Still a scary thing to think about though.

Well, during that procedure, they found the beginnings of two ulcers, some acid reflux damage, and determined that I have a condition called Gastritis. Look it up if you’d like. The gist of it is all of those combined can cause the same kind of pain a heart attack does, and is what lead me to feel so bad. The good thing is it can be treated with medications. Yep, you guessed it, even more pills added to my regimen now. I was at 13 pills a day when I posted my forum discussion last week. Now it’s up to about 20.

My cardiologist did give me another bit of encouraging news. All of the tests indicated that my heart has actually gotten about 5% stronger since the last time I was checked. The heart is now functioning at 40%, instead of 35%. Not a big change, but any improvement is awesome in my book.

So yeah, that’s what’s been going on with me. I’m so glad to be at home, and have actually been taking it easy since I got home. I’ll be going back to work tomorrow night, and I’ll be resuming the rest of my normal routine as I feel like it.

Thanks to all of you who have sent prayers and well wishes my way. I really can’t tell you all how much I appreciate them. They’ve helped more than you’ll ever know.

Keep Fighting It, and Rock On!
Mike.

Bump one up, add one more…

Had an appointment with my PCP this morning. It went fairly well; talked about the results of my last A1C test, which were awesome, and my CHF, etc… I’ve been having more trouble with my blood pressure the last few weeks. Some of the chest pain and breathing problems have returned, so they bumped up the dosage on my BP medicine. They also added an allergy medicine to help with some other problems I’ve been having. So, I’m up to 8 prescriptions now, plus an aspirin.

I had fairly nice vacation week before last. Went to Louisville, KY to see the family, and was able to celebrate my 25th birthday with everyone at my grandmother’s house. My aunt brought her Nintendo Wii over to the party, and everyone from my sister up to my grandmother got involved with playing one game or another. We bowled, golfed, and had a really good time. It did me a lot of good to have all of my family together in one place, without any drama, and having a good time together. I had such a good time playing the Wii golf and bowling, that I ordered one of my own. Got it this past Thursday. The only real down point in the trip was when I picked up a screw in my tire before coming home on Sunday. Thankfully, it happened before I got on the highway, and I was able to get it fixed.

Have a great week, everyone.

Until next time….. Keep Fighting it, and Rock on!
Mike.

A few details

I finally beat the cardiologist into submission, and got some straight answers and details about what’s wrong with my heart. The heart test results indicated that my heart is still pretty weak, with functionality still around 35%, and that my Left Anterior Descending artery is blocked 30%. To put that into context, they start doing stints and angioplasty at 70%. So, it’s not as bad as it could be, but still not very good either. I’ve been put on Plavix and Zocor to help fight this problem. I’m up to 8 different medications that I take every day. 7 of them are for my heart problems alone. The other is my diabetes med. I take a combo of 6 in the morning, and a combo of 5 at night. Crazy.

So, we are continuing to hope and pray that the medications will do the trick, and that we’ll be able to avoid any kind of surgery. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens. I’m slowly coming to terms with the way things came about the last few weeks, with the mistakes and all. I mean, who wouldn’t be completely furious in my position? On a positive note, I now have the cardiologist’s personal cell phone number, and was told to call him any time I have questions or concerns. Anyway, enough about that.

Have a great weekend everyone. Rock on!

Quick heart update

Well, true to his word, the cardiologist called me early this morning with the results of the heart test. It turns out that I do have a blocked artery in my heart after all. He said it was minor, what ever that means, and is going to put me on another medication to see if we can fix the problem that way. I’m going to be following up with him on Monday to get a little more detail on which artery it is, and exactly how bad it is.

Thanks for the continued prayers and support.
Rock on!

One step forward … three steps back

Had a very disappointing visit with the cardiologist this morning.

It turns out that when I called to get the results of my CT Angiogram a few weeks ago, they only had part of the results in, and they were from secondary tests performed that day, and not the heart test. The secondary tests came back fine. They didn’t have the heart test results at that time, but not realizing they were missing, they told me everything was fine. Well, I get in there today, and find out they still don’t have the heart test results, because of some screw up on the part of the doctor and the lab techs.

So, to make a long and upsetting story short, I’m back to not knowing whether I have block arteries in my heart. This is after being led to believe that I didn’t for the last few weeks. The doctor promises to call me as soon as he knows, but I’m not holding my breath. He’s been warned that I’m going to be looking for a new cardiologist if this is the type of care his patients receive.

I was feeling so good on the back of yesterday’s news about my A1C being 6.5. Today I was knocked down again. It’s a vicious cycle; one day you’re flying high, and the next the wind is knocked out of your sails. Oh well.

I guess I can draw some solace in knowing that I’m doing everything that I’m supposed to be doing to fight these problems. And I’m seeing the results of my efforts, which makes it even easier to keep going. My A1C is down to 6.5, I’ve lost about 30lbs, I’m eating better, and trying to take better care of myself. Just have to keep at it.

Holy cow … 6.5

I just got some really awesome news from my doctor. I had blood draw on Monday for an A1C, and called to get the results today. I have gone from 9.6 when I was diagnosed in late December to 6.5 as of March 2nd. That’s a 3 point drop in just under 3 months time. Holy cow! That is freakin’ awesome.

Rock on!
